Todd Hido is a San Francisco Bay area-based artist whose work has been featured in Artforum, The New York Times Magazine, Eyemazing, Metropolis, The Face, I-D, and Vanity Fair. His photographs are in the permanent collections of the Whitney Museum of Art, the Guggenheim Museum, New York, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, as well as in many other public and private collections.
In 2001 an award winning monograph of his work titled, House Hunting, was published by Nazraeli Press and a companion monograph, Outskirts, was published in 2002. His third book, Roaming, was published in 2004.
His latest book—Between the Two—this one focusing on portraits and nudes—was published in 2007.
He is an adjunct professor at the California College of Art, San Francisco, California

Il existe toujours une solution pour satisfaire chacune de nos envies et nous désirons posséder toujours plus, égoïstement ; la volonté de jouissance immédiate et l'individualisme déshumanisent notre relation à l'autre.
Le désir, est-ce véritablement cela ? Avec ce numéro de purpose, nous avons essayé de l'envisager autrement, comme une forme de résistance à la marchandisation du monde.
Se préoccuper de l'être avant l'avoir, savoir prendre son temps et même le perdre, être assoiff&eacut...
«... Durant plus de vingt ans, Todd Hido a travaillé sur plusieurs ensembles d’images, souvent en même temps. Quand chaque ensemble a acquis la densité d’un projet abouti, Hido l’a publié sous forme de livre et exposé comme une suite de tirages. Ce qui est présenté ici est une séquence extraite de toute la profondeur et de l’étendue de son oeuvre singulière : Le voyage hasardeux,
l’errance, la quête et le retour.
Si les photographies et leur agencement de Todd Hido semblent narratifs, c’est parce qu’ils suggèrent des histoires non racontées et de possibles scénarios. Ces suggestions sont autant les vôtres que celles de Hido, elles viennent sans doute autant du ciné...
The Photographer’s Playspace features twenty photographers who have created new works in response to assignments from the Aperture book The Photographer’s Playbook: 307 Assignments and Ideas, a recently published compilation designed to inspire fresh perspectives in a photographer’s creative process.
Using assignments selected by Christopher McCall, director of Pier 24 Photography, the photographers produced works that both reflect a continuation of established practices and represent new directions in making pictures. The exhibition reveals each artist’s distinctive process and aesthetic, demonstrating how a simple prompt can inspire renewed engagement with the medium.

This original exhibition is the second installment of a triennial series showcasing the talent of and diverse scope of photographic work being done by photographers living within the Museum’s home state. Sixteen different artists, all of whom reside in California, are featured in the exhibition and all of the work has been created within the past five years.
The artists are both established and emerging and the variety of work is as varied as the state of California itself. Staking Claim: A California Invitational embraces the digital medium but also remains true to, and in some cases reinterprets, traditional photographic processes. The result is a dynamic exhibition that highlights the constant evolution of the art form.

Le travail que Todd Hido a entrepris depuis près de 20 ans dresse le portrait d'une autre Amérique, loin de la vision idéalisée des success stories. Images d'un pays austère et vide caractérisé par ses routes qui se croisent, ses impasses sombres et ses autoroutes qui ne finissent jamais ; photographies d'un réalisme exacerbé, aux paysages instables et tourmentés, le monde dépeint par Todd Hido est loin des clichés d'un rêve américain où tout serait possible.

Todd Hido révèle des beautés qui normalement passent inaperçues par leur banalité : un intérieur, un alignement de façades, une route sans fin sous la pluie ou après l’orage. Ces beautés qui enchantent la vie quand on les apprécie à leur juste valeur, Todd Hido les saisit pour mieux les montrer. Ainsi révélées, elles offrent une dimension nouvelle à l’ordinaire. C’est ce que nous pourrions appeler le sur-réel, qui grâce à la lumière très singulière, exalte l’étrange en ravissant ce qui est des plus communs.
