Helsinki School - Seven Approaches is the first gallery exhibition in the US to consist entirely of members of the Helsinki School. Now internationally recognized, the Helsinki School started in the mid 1990’s as an educational model from the University of Art and Design, Helsinki, Finland. It has grown to represent more than forty-five photo and video artists and is now considered to be one of the premier photographic schools in the world. Collectively these artists account for more than forty monogram books in print; including three Volumes of the Helsinki School Photography by TaiK. This year is the 90th anniversary of the diplomatic relations between Finland and Japan, and it also happens to be Shiseido Gallery's 90th year. In light of these, Shiseido Gallery will be the first in Asia to conduct an exhibition introducing the photography of the "Helsinki School," which is currently among the vanguards of the European and American art scenes.
Helsinki School is the name given to a loose group of teachers, students, and graduates dedicated to preserving the aesthetic approaches and thinking that have emerged from the teaching methodologies used at the University of Art and Design Helsinki. These were promoted originally by Timothy Persons, the guest curator of this exhibition, who joined the faculty as senior lecturer in 1982. Les courtes histoires qu’elles évoquent mettent en scène un personnage seul, généralement une jeune femme, dont le visage est caché, et qui donne la nette impression d’être perdu, à la recherche de quelque chose d’introuvable, noyé dans sa solitude au sein d’une nature qui joue le rôle d’un autre personnage.
