Michael Schmidt was born in 1945 in Berlin, where he currently lives and works. His solo exhibitions include "Grey as Colour. Photographs until 2009," Haus der Kunst, Münich (2010); Galerie Nordenhake Berlin (2009); "Irgendwo," co-organized by the Kunstverein Heilbronn, Oldenburger Kunstverien, Arp Museum Rolandseck, Remagen (2005); "Frauen - EIN-HEIT - Menschenbilder," at the Kunstverein in der Kunsthalle Düsseldorf (2000); and "U-NI-TY," at the Museum of Modern Art, New York and Sprengel Museum, Hannover (1996). He has participated in numerous group exhibitions, including "Wildnis wird Garten wird Wilniss," a special exhibition at the Photographische Sammlung/SK Stiftung at Art Cologne (2009); "In the Face of History - European Photographers in the 20th Century," Barbican entre, London (2006); "Of Mice and Men," Berlin Biennial for Contemporary Art, Berlin (2006); "Zwischen Wirklichkeit und Bild: Positionen deutscher Fotografie der Gegenwart," The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo, The National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto, and the Marugame Genichiro Inokuma Museum of Contemporary Art, Shikoku (2005); "Cruel + Tender," Tate Modern, London, and Museum Ludwig, Köln (2003); "Openends, Counter-Monuments and Memory," The Museum of Modern Art, New York (2001); and "Das Versprechen der Fotografie," Akademie der Künste, Berlin (2000). Works from his series "Frauen" were recently publically installed as posters for the 6th Berlin Biennale of Contemporary Art (2010).
