«Acteur de la scène de l’art contemporain à Bangkok, Manit Sriwanichpoom se définit lui-même comme un activiste qui utilise la photographie dans la mesure où elle lui permet de mettre rapidement en forme ses points de vue, ses protestations, ses urgences. Il est absolument réactif, immédiat. Il a ainsi réalisé une remarquable série de mises en scène, en noir et blanc, encadrées dans de lourdes dorures, parodiant des icônes du photojournalisme, dans lesquelles des victimes du napalm ou des réfugiés fuyaient en transportant des emballages des grandes marques de luxe internationales. C’était sa réponse au krach financier en Asie du Sud-Est à la fin des années quatre-vingt. Il a inventé un personnage, « Mister Pink », vêtu d’un costume en soie rose intense, accompagné d’un caddie et d’un téléphone portable de même couleur qui lui sert à révéler et dénoncer les travers consuméristes de notre société.»

Fear is an ambitious showcase by one of Thailand’s leading photographers, consisting of ten new series and two video works across four galleries in Bangkok and Singapore. Daily life in Thailand continues to unfold amidst protracted political problems. Military intervention has removed two governments in a decade and major recurring streets protests have brought to the fore critical questions of a malfunctioning democracy with corporate interest and corruption afflicting the electoral process. While this contemporary context is not entirely unprecedented in the history of Thailand’s fraught process of nation-building...
Saturated, intense, the make and female nudes bathed in deep blue and crimson entice the viewer into another state of being. Manit Sriwanichpoom’s latest work is the opening show for the grand opening of Adler Subhasok Gallery, 13 March – 30 April 2014, and from the end of March at the Paris Art Fair under the banner of the Adler Subhashok Gallery – a gallery formed to bring quality Thai art to the world.
Manit says of BLUE:
« The male and female nudes twist themselves into unnatural poses; their naked flesh saturated with the colour blue robs them of their sexual nature and identity so that they seem androgynous. They are like tormented souls in the midst of conflicting forces. They twist and contort themselves into impossible knots, finding no way out. »

To be shown at the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre will be a unique exhibition of five international photographic artists who in varying yet very distinctive ways, explore photographically the recent political crisis that blistered and then erupted in Bangkok. All five visions when installed together will provide the viewer with a jarred, broken and potently visionary, visceral experience.
The diversity of the artists is a key component to the impact of ‘Rupture – Cause & Effect’, photographically each one hits an alternative nuance, an incisive & personal resonance, that is not currently represented.
