Magdalena Sole #Photographe
Born in Spain and raised in Switzerland, Magdalena Solé arrived in New York City in 1984 where she still lives with her family. Visual language has been her life’s work. She founded a graphic design studio, TransImage in 1989. She went on to graduate with a Masters of Fine Art in Film from Columbia University in 2002. She served as Unit Production Manager on the set of “Man On Wire” which won an Academy Award in 2009.

MAGDALENA SOLÉ – Artist’s Statement
CUBA—Hasta Siempre
When I arrived in Cuba for the first time, I was transported to the time and place of my childhood in Spain.It was so unexpected. My childhood was pre-modern, with time for family and friends, conversation, preparing meals, and sending letters with stamps.
Over the years I have visited Spain often and have watched the country enter the modern age, where progress and economic growth has made it sparkling, clean and well organized, but with fewer human interactions not defined by a smart phone. The loss of my childhood Spain filled me with a profound sadness and melancholy, which remained like an undercurrent in my life until I found Cuba, or better, Cuba found me.

Magdalena Solé is a social documentary photographer living in New York and now Vermont. She is known for her sensitive expressions of culture through distinctive color artistry. Her photographic projects span the globe from the Mississippi Delta to Japan and Cuba.
Solé’s series, Mississippi Delta, is featured in the Main Gallery at the Griffin Museum January 8 through March 1, 2015. An opening reception with the artists takes place on January 10, 7-8:30 p.m. Magdalena Solé has a gallery talk and tour of Mississippi Delta at 4:00 PM. Brandon Thibodeaux has a gallery talk and tour of When Morning Comes at 5 PM. Bryan David Griffith has a members’ talk on his exhibition The Last Bookstores at 6:15 PM. The talks are FREE.

“Mississippi Delta” is an exploration of communities in the South. The Delta is an iconic region lying between the Mississippi and Yazoo Rivers, running from Memphis, TN to Vicksburg, MS, a place that evokes visions of sharecroppers, plantations and, of course, the sound of the Blues. A small wealthy gentry and a large impoverished underclass lives in dilapidated houses and tilting trailers. Its community is very conscious of its own identity and its racial diversity.
