Lynne Cohen

Née en 1944 aux États-Unis, Lynne Cohen vit aujourd’hui à Montréal. Après des études de sculpture et de gravure, elle s’est orientée vers des travaux photographiques qui, dès ses débuts, considéraient la vie quotidienne, ses illusions et ses contradictions. Si son uvre soulève des problèmes sociaux, politiques, voire polémiques, ses critiques laissent la place à une forme d’humour incisif. Depuis 1971, elle a présenté de nombreuses expositions personnelles et de groupe. Cinq monographies sont parues sur son uvre photographique : Occupied Territory, Aperture, L’Endroit du décor / Lost and Found, Frac-Limousin, No Man’s Land, Thames and Hudson, Camouflage et Cover, Le Point du Jour. Elle est représentée dans des collections publiques et privées telles que la National Gallery of Canada, le Metropolitan Museum of Art, l’Art Institute of Chicago, la Bibliothèque nationale, l’Art Gallery of Ontario, le Center for Creative Photography, l’International Center of Photography, plusieurs collections Frac ainsi que le musée d’Art moderne de la Ville de Paris

Depuis plus de trente ans, Lynne Cohen photographie des salons, des clubs masculins, des salles de classe, des établissements de bain et des installations militaires. Elle pourrait être une collectionneuse en quête, à travers toutes ces pièces, de la pièce unique ; mais une collectionneuse que l’origine ou l’authenticité n’intéressent guère : Lynne Cohen préfère en effet ne pas préciser où ses photographies ont été prises, contribuant ainsi à accroître leur uniformité factice. En réalité, chaque site prélevé dans le monde matériel, devient encadré sur les murs de l’espace d’exposition, le lieu d’un drame possible. Accrochées plus bas que d’ordinaire, les images semblent des fenêtres à travers lesquelles nous pourrions basculer, comme Alice de l’autre côté du miroir. Les ouvertures d’où proviennent un éclairage artificiel, les rectangles de néons qui paraissent des vasistas opaques, les reflets réels ou supposés participent de cette impression de mise en abyme. Dans ce monde imaginé par l’homme, rien n’est à la mesure de l’humain : des mannequins, des animaux peints, une famille de sous-marins noirs en promenade en sont d’ailleurs les rares habitants. Les cartes et les écrans signalent évidemment une logique policière ou marchande. Mais à ce contrôle social, Lynne Cohen n’oppose pas un discours de dénonciation. C’est par le tranchant de l’humour noir et de l’incongruité de l’objet trouvé que toute norme se trouve, d’un souffle, subrepticement subvertie.
