Fred Stein (né Alfred Stein), le 3 juillet 1909 à Dresde et mort le 27 septembre 1967 à New York, est un pionnier de la photographie avec des appareils de petit format, 24x36, puis de moyen format, 6x6, pour le portrait.

C’est par la force des choses que Fred Stein (1909-1967) est devenu photographe de métier. Né en Allemagne, avocat de formation, militant antifasciste et juif, Stein réussit à échapper au nazisme à deux reprises : une première fois, en 1933, pour se réfugier à Paris et une seconde fois, en 1941, pour rejoindre les États-Unis. Son oeuvre raconte le parcours d’une vie ballotée par l’Histoire, documente une époque et des lieux mais révèle surtout la profondeur et le talent d’un immense auteur quasiment inconnu jusqu’à ce jour. Du vendredi 3 mars au dimanche 16 avril prochain, La Chambre - espace d’exposition et de formation à l’image accueille le travail de Fred Stein. Observateur sensible de la vie urbaine, Fred Stein s'expose pour sa première monographie en France à La Chambre.
Près de 150 images issues du fond que gère son fils, Peter Stein, seront exposées à Strasbourg.
Forcé de quitter l’Allemagne en 1933 suite à la menace nazie, Fred Stein arrive à Paris et intègre le milieu des réfugiés politiques et intellectuels. Fred Stein was born in Dresden in 1909, the son of a rabbi. When the Nazis came to power, the committed socialist was forced to give up his job as a lawyer and leave Germany. Under the pretext of taking a honeymoon trip, he escaped to Paris with his wife Lilo in 1933. There he faced the challenge of building a new livelihood from scratch.
Inspired by a Leica 35mm camera - Fred and Lilo Stein’s wedding gift to each other - Fred Stein chose photography as his new profession.

Un an jour pour jour après les autodafés est fondée à Paris, en mai 1934, La Bibliothèque allemande de la liberté (ou des livres brûlés) grâce à l’initiative d’Alfred Kantorowicz, Alfred Kerr, Egon Kisch... Elle est présidée par Heinrich Mann. Sont ainsi rassemblés dans un local du 65 bd Arago, dès son inauguration, 11 000 ouvrages interdits par les Nazis. Redécouverte d’un photographe, Fred Stein (1909-1967) – pour la première fois exposé dans un musée français – que rien ne prédisposait à cette étrange destinée. A l’occasion de la parution en français des Ecrits juifs d’Hannah Arendt et de la réédition de la Biographie d’Hannah Arendt par E. Young Bruehl en novembre 2011, le Musée du Montparnasse propose, en partenariat avec les Editions Fayard et le Labex TransferS, une exposition des portraits de ce photographe.

Including works by a wide range of twentieth and twenty-first century artists, Food for Thought: A Group Exhibition surveys a range of photographs that are testament to our insatiable appetite for feasting and photography. The exhibition will include images with food as a common thread ranging from classical still lives to commercial commissions advertising their wares to surreal assemblages. What unites these very disparate registers of photographic production is the camera's seductive power to enliven the objects before it's lens, or conversely, for the objects to appeal themselves to the camera's powers. Amidst well-known masters of the genre such as Irving Penn and Paul Outerbridge, photographers such as Ansel Adams best known for their achievements in other areas line up alongside contemporary artists ...
