Representations explores the concept of photographic truth and its correspondence to perceived reality. No digital manipulation is involved. In stark contrast to Cubism's merging of multiple perspectives, Representations exploits the limitations of the camera's singular point of view, drawing attention to the deceptive nature of first impressions and the illusion inherent in any representation. These images examine the nature and identity of photography and its relationship to what we perceive and experience to be real and true....
Drawing Pictures, curated by Joelle Jensen, features four contemporary photographers who employ drawing to push the boundaries of both media. They utilize Jasper Johns’ methodology—“Take an object. Do something to it. Do something else to it.”—expanding the boundaries of the medium. While ultimately photographic, the artist’s hand permeates each image. The explicit surfaces in each print prevent entry into the picture plane and prohibit escape into photographic illusion. Simultaneously, the mechanical process of photography suppresses the act of hand rendering....
The UNO ART SPACE – Ute Noll will be presenting for the first time in Germany the color photographs of the American artist Cynthia Greig. On exhibit will be her series “Life-Size” (2001 – 2003) and “Representations” (2002 – to present). The exhibition will open on Saturday, November 8 and close on February 8, 2009.
Both Life-Size and Representations deal with objects from daily life. “Life-Size” plays with the shifting of scales and depicts miniature objects and normal-sized household articles or people in the same image. For her “Representations” series, Cynthia Greig painted household objects white and then drew in the outlines for the camera. What emerged are meditative still lifes with shifted perspectives.
