Kris Graves Projects is proud to announce FORST, the first New York solo exhibition of photographer Andreas Gehrke. Curated by Kris Graves.
“For that is a distinction we must always make: the forest as a massive collection of trees of all varieties is seen as a resource, not as an environment. Whereas the single or planted tree is seen by most of us as a permanent, carefully tended element of human landscape, valued as an object both of beauty and of sustainable exploitation." -J.B. Jackson
In this seminal exhibition, Gehrke explores the concept of environmental transformation in various natural landscapes. Shot in locations both foreign and familiar, these haunting images of manipulated rural areas evidence the troubling repercussions of forced development and commercial exploitation in the natural world. The quiet isolation depicted in the series offers the viewer a temporary moment of peace within this rapid current of perpetual change, echoing Gehrke's continued personal quest to search for a rooted "sense of place".
